Your ultimate guide to skin hydration

Maintaining a consistent skincare routine is a must if you wish to achieve beautiful skin. Keeping skin hydrated is a vital part of skin looking and feeling it’s best. Read on about why skin hydration plays such an important role and learn some easy tips for maintaining skin’s moisture.

Why is hydration important?

When skin is well hydrated, it is more resilient and plump. Adequate water inside and out is essential, so skin looks healthier and is less prone to the signs of premature aging and wrinkles. It’s necessary to keep hydrated from within as well as on the surface.

The best way to hydrate

On the market are a lot of moisturizers to choose from, and not all of these do the same job. You can choose from lightweight water-based or heavier night creams. What works for one skin type, may not work for another, so make sure you get the one that suits your skin type. 

Use a water-based moisturizer

We know that drinking lots of water throughout the day is great. However, you also need to apply the same idea to your skin. A water-based moisturiser can help provide longer lasting hydration and treat thirsty skin.

If you have normal/oily skin, it’s still vital that you moisturise. External factors such as UV rays and excessive cleansing can cause damage to the moisture barrier which means a super shiny complexion. A water-based moisturiser can help reduce the excess shine.

Tips for skin hydration

1. Use a gentle cleanser before moisturizing

This should be the initial step in your twice daily skincare routine. Make sure that you are cleansing to remove excess dirt and grease that may have built up.

2. Apply moisture on damp skin

Avoid towel drying when you have finished cleansing and instead apply your moisturiser onto wet skin to help lock in the hydration. Use this same tactic when you come out the shower to aid hydration to your whole body.

3. Pay attention to dry areas

Your feet, knees, and elbows are areas that tend to suffer the most, so when you are applying lotion, be sure to bear this in mind. Give your feet/ hands a treat overnight, use cream and then wear socks or gloves to bed so the moisturizer can work in overnight. Another area which often gets dry and chapped is your lips, so be sure to stock up on lip balm.

4. Less is more

Check out the instructions on the packaging and make sure you aren’t over-applying. A coin-sized amount should be more than enough to cover your entire face.

5. Extend past your jawline

If you tend only to pay attention to your face during your skincare routine, make it your goal to extend this to your neck and chest as this is an area that can sometimes be missed.

6. Change things up with the seasons

The moisturizer you use in the winter, when your skin is typically drier, may not work in the summer months. In the Spring/ Summer when it is warm and humid outside, you may find a light lotion is all you need to keep skin hydrated. Also, a moisturiser with a matte finish or blotting papers in your bag may help to reduce excess oil.
